10 Things Your Family Can do to Get Ready for Kindergarten

  1. Limit the amount of TV children watch. Watch with your children and discuss what they are seeing.
  2. Create a routine over the summer. Have some structure to the mornings and evenings.  Routines will be helpful when school starts.
  3. Have a set bedtime and stick to it.
  4. Use counting in your daily activities. Count blocks, steps to the mailbox, fruit in a bowl, anything around the house.
  5. Read books everyday. This is a great activity to do at bedtime. Talk about what you are reading.
  6. Ask lots of questions when you are out doing errands.  Ask children what they see, hear or experience.
  7. Practice independence.  Let your children make certain choices (which shirt would you like to wear today?)
  8. Encourage trying new things.  New experinces give children a chance to learn problem solving techniques.
  9. Set aside a study spot.  Encourage children to spend time there everyday coloring, drawing or creating. This can later become the place where they do homework and they will be in the habit of sitting there already!
  10. Teach children their full name, address and phone number.
