BABY SIGN: Signing with babies … is it the new fad? Something only power moms who want superbabies do? A sure-fire way to form a speech delay? You may already know that the answer to all of the above questions is a resounding NO. People have been signing with their babies for years. The most common reason for doing so is an intense desire on the part of a parent or caregiver to find out exactly what is going on in a baby’s mind – what does she need? What does she want? What does she observe? What does she think about and remember? It is a fact that infants develop the fine muscles in their hands before they develop those required for speech, so they’re equipped to communicate with you before they can speak. Come learn some basic sign language, meet parents with other babies and have some FUN! Wednesdays Nov. 17, Dec 1, 8 & 15 9:45 – 10:30 At Strong School ABC Read with Me: Children ages 3, 4 & 5 Children prepare to read long before they enter school - early literacy is everything children know about reading and writing before they can actually read and write. Early literacy skills begin to develop in the first 5 years of life. The most important thing you can do to foster early literacy is provide an atmosphere that's fun, verbal and stimulating. That is our goal as we read some story time favorites and work on our pre-reading skills Session 1: Wednesdays Sept 22, 29 and Oct 6 &13 9:30 – 10:30 at Strong School Session 2: Wednesdays Oct 20, 27, Nov 3 & 10 9:30 – 10:30 at Strong School 123 Read With Me: Children ages 3, 4, & 5 This program, geared for children ages 3, 4 ,& 5, will connect math with literacy. We will use children’s literature to introduce early math skills such as sorting, counting, and patterning while connecting it to our story. Session 1: Thursdays Sept: 23, 30 and Oct: 7 & 14 1:00 – 2:00 at Plantsville School Session 2: Thursdays Oct: 21, 28 & Nov: 4, & 11 1:00 - 2:00 at Plantsville School In September of 2008 the CFGNB awarded ECCS with a grant of $25,000 to lay the foundations for a brand new Family Resource Center. The first steps involved an exhaustive search for a director to begin programming. By November a director with ten years experience working in FRCs was offered the opportunity to begin working in Southington. In January 2009 the first FRC playgroups began. Over the next year these playgroups met in three of the local elementary schools and area playgrounds. In addition to playgroups the FRCS began a parenting book club and a family literacy education program. In total forty-eight families and nearly eighty children were touched by the work of the FRCS in just the first six months of operation. In September of 2009 the CFGNB awarded the ECCS with another grant of $20,000 which matched the $20,000 the Southington Board of Education also provided. With these funds the FRCS was able to hire an additional staff person and increase programming and community outreach. In the first year of its existence, the FRCS has been able to form many relationships with community organizations including adult education, the Southington Board of Education and Elementary schools, as well as the ELL department, local pediatricians, Youth Services, and Wheeler Clinic. These relationships are helping the FRCS find the neediest of Southington families who can benefit the most from FRCS programs.
