Parenting with a CBT Perspective, a mental health workshop series

This workshop series seeks to give parents and caregivers an introduction to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) basics. It will cover disciplining issues, using rewards and consequences, using praise, the Thoughts/Feelings/Actions model, and dealing with child anxiety.

This will be presented in-person on four consecutive Thursday evenings: March 9, 16, 23, and 30 starting at 6:30 pm.

These workshops are for caregivers of preschool and elementary-aged children, but parents of older children are welcome. Fifty percent of all lifetime mental illnesses start by age 14, per the National Institute of Mental Health, so it is important to identify and treat this early.

Register on Eventbrite.

D. David Pecirep MS, LPC, from Beacon Counseling, LLC, works in private practice out of the office of a local pediatrician. Based on what he sees with his pediatric patients, David will develop and teach this “Parenting with a CBT Perspective” mental health workshop series.

David is a board certified and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and earned his Master’s in Counseling from Central Connecticut State University. As a clinician, he spent over two years working at a residential detox and substance abuse facility focused on inpatient treatment, intensive outpatient programming, as well as group and individual counseling.  He deployed twice with the US Army Infantry and then went on to spend three years working in research on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injuries (TBI) with the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) and Yale University.

This workshop is for adults. Childcare is not available, but babies are welcome.

This workshop series is part of the ECCS’s Southington Community Well-Being Grant Initiative, funded by the Bradley Henry Barnes & Leila Upson Barnes Memorial Trust at the Main Street Community Foundation.

Kindergarten Registration

Online registration for kindergarten has opened at the Southington Public Schools site. The birth certificate, parent ID, residency, and other documents needed to complete the registration process will be uploaded. The in-person registration step, which you attend with your child, will be held at each school; call to make an appointment. The child will visit with literacy, math, and other staff specialists who will do a brief developmental screening. This appointment, which takes about 15 minutes, will complete the registration process. Learn more at  https://www.southingtonearlychildhood.org/southington-kindergarten-registration/
